Reston Association Statement on Reston Town Center North

(Posted Jun. 17, 2024) In anticipation of the upcoming public meeting surrounding the Reston Town Center North (RTCN) development plan, Reston Association (RA) sent a letter to Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, maintaining its desire to collaborate with the County on the dedicated 10 acres of open space agreed to under a 2016 Memorandum of Understanding between the County, RA and Inova.

“Reston Association looks forward to working with the County in shaping the vision for the 10 acres of open space in Reston Town Center North,” said Mac Cummins, Chief Executive Officer of Reston Association. “We are energized by the potential this open space offers for RA members and the broader community, especially since Parks, Recreation, and Open Space were recently designated as a Land Use Category in the updated Comprehensive Plan”.

The RTC North project aims to redevelop the area into a vibrant urban, mixed-use environment that transitions from the Reston Town Center to the existing surrounding development. In 1974, Gulf Reston, Inc. conveyed a 10-acre strip of land along the western portion of RTCN to the County, stating that the 10 acres would be left in its natural state. In 2016, all three parties reached an agreement that the redevelopment plan would provide a minimum of 10 acres of open space, designated as a combination of a public recreation center, a central green, tree save and/or urban park, athletic fields and related uses/functions.

RA’s Design Review Board approved concept plans in 2021 for the proposed street layout, central green and tree save areas, and the County created a task force in early 2023 to envision further details on what the site may entail.
