Hunters Woods Ballfield

Redevelopment Project

Hunters Woods Ballfield Redevelopment Project

(UPDATE from Nov. 7, 2023) Reston Association has announced that the new community park located on the former Hunter’s Woods ballfield is now complete, bringing a new pathway network, landscaping with native plants, park furniture, improved drainage and a little free library to the site. At the same time, a number of mature trees on the site were also preserved, maintaining shaded areas and varying landscapes for the community to enjoy.

Overview

Reston Association is leading a community-based effort to re-purpose the Hunters Woods ball field behind the Hunters Woods Village Center. The field is no longer used, mainly due to the lack of parking and its remote location. The area will be transformed and utilized for passive recreation.

RA has worked with neighboring property owners and cluster associations, along with our planning and design consultant, Kimley-Horn and Associates. The concept plan was presented and approved in 2020 by the Hunters Woods Neighborhood Coalition, RA Board of Directors and the RA Design Review Board.

RA has also obtained zoning approval from Fairfax County which will soon approve the submitted minor site plan for the project.

The concept proposes the addition of a pathway circumnavigating the perimeter of the site with another more formal walkway through the middle. These pathways will have adjacent native plantings, bench seating and educational signage. The purpose of the project is to re-activate the site and make it more usable and interesting for residents in the surrounding neighborhoods.

This project is scheduled to go before the Design Review Board at its June 21, 2022 meeting. You can find a copy of that application along with other documents by using the below “access important documents” link.
